Systems Development Engineering (SDE) at Google is a role in which you manage large-scale services and systems. SDEs use their engineering discipline in creative ways to automate mundane work and reduce labor. We don’t just write code to fix bugs, but we focus on creating tools and solutions that solve that type of problem. We know it’s hard to control what you can’t measure – so we focus on observation: first application, then turning data into insight, and finally insight into action. We know that the functioning of systems, Google services, computer environments, and operating systems affect the environment, not just the land. We know that by working together we can achieve more for the community. Google brings together people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We encourage them to collaborate, think big and take risks in a flawless environment. We promote freedom to work and meaningful work, as we try to create an environment that provides the support and advice necessary to learn and grow.
Together, we design and build infrastructure, infrastructure, access and telemetry for systems that enable Google-level operations. Come build something important.
As a systems development engineer, you are responsible for ensuring that Google Compute Engine (GCE) virtual machines support all operating systems. You will interact with the community and operating system vendors to compile and distribute base images configured to run efficiently on Google Cloud. You ensure that the client’s current operating system selection is not a barrier to GCE acceptance. Google Cloud empowers organizations to digitally transform their business using the best infrastructure, platforms, enterprise solutions and expertise. We deliver enterprise solutions using Google technology, all in the industry’s cleanest cloud. Customers in more than 200 countries and territories turn to Google Cloud as a trusted partner to drive growth and solve their most important business problems.
Work:
Participate in on-call activities and manage systems within the department and work with key stakeholders to help resolve system issues. Diagnose technical issues, analyze technical data and create recommendations for departmental systems and services, respond to tickets/bugs within the scope of SLOs defined by the team and contribute to systems and services in related areas through reporting bug and research.
Collaborate with customers to define distributed system requirements, test procedures and propose solutions. Collaborate with remote communities, partners and customers.
Build and maintain operating system images for standard operating systems (e.g. Ubuntu, Debian, Windows, RHEL, etc.).
