Film production at Walt Disney Animation Studios requires complex systems and resources to support technical workflows, large datasets, high-performance computing for intensive applications, and much more.
The Data Center Services team provides and supports the studio’s critical technical infrastructure, including our premises and consolidated data centers, critical server technology, security systems and data storage systems. These teams are made up of engineers and other technical professionals who oversee the company’s infrastructure.
The Systems Engineer will contribute to the data center team’s efforts to design, implement and manage complex systems in the data center studio and related areas. This includes physical and virtual server environments, enterprise storage and computing systems, large backup and storage environments, and other enterprise systems that provide core services and resources for Studio.
The Systems Engineer will work with other engineers and support staff to solve problems, plan/lead projects throughout the year, and identify long-term technology goals.
Functions:
- Servers and VMs
- Collaborate with the team to design and maintain the necessary server infrastructure for various studio applications. Find the best server hardware. ○ Assist in annual installation, replacement and budget support and scheduling.
- Collaborate with other technical teams to implement and maintain VM environments. Manage support and development budgets and schedules for all systems.
- Data source
- Participate in installation planning and execution efforts, including major equipment replacement/expansion. ○ Collaborate with team members to plan and perform necessary maintenance, upgrades and troubleshooting of all systems. Allow work processes to be flexible to accommodate problem-solving activities. ○ Assists in creating and maintaining runbooks of all relevant processes and protocols
- Assist in developing and managing monitoring systems for critical technologies, including security systems, server health and status, and physical infrastructure
- Data security
- Help manage and maintain security systems to support various applications
- Collaborate with other technical teams and production management to implement and support extensive security measures
- Data backup, data protection, disaster recovery
- Assist in managing the studio data backup process. This includes creating new systems and processes based on the needs of the studio and improving existing systems.
- Help maintain a disaster recovery program including regular testing
General
Assist in creating annual budgets for data center technology purchases. This includes restoration of equipment, introduction of new technology or expansion of existing technology, maintenance, etc. ○ Work with hardware vendors to explore new technologies
Qualifications Required:
- At least 5 years of experience in Enterprise data center engineering and administration.
- Familiarity with high-performance security systems, such as Isilon, Qumulo, NetApp, or Vast.
- Advanced knowledge of creating and managing virtual computing environments, such as VMware, RHEV, Kubernetes, Docker, etc.
- Advanced knowledge of design and administration of backup/storage technologies, products and standards such as NetBackup and Bareos, Quantum, LTO.
- Advanced knowledge of cable channels.
- Strong knowledge of Linux, extensive experience in managing common Linux environments (Red Hat, etc.)
- Knowing the color environment. Candidate Qualifications:
- Experience in film production, CG animation, visual effects or video game environments.
- Familiarity with Mac/Windows administration.
- Good understanding of computer architecture design, installation, configuration, troubleshooting, monitoring and security procedures.
- Knowledge of the physical environment of the data center, including HVAC, electrical and other systems
- Understanding of cloud computing including AWS, GCP and Azure.
- Familiarity with network technology and communication principles.
- Expertise in common scripting languages such as Python, Perl, JavaScript or similar
